Hunting in Poland
Hunting Red Stag
RED DEER (Cervus elaphus) lives generally all over Poland’s territory, but local tendencies for larger or smaller concentration can be seen. The number of Red Deer is definitely highest in the following Regions of Poland (Voivodeships): Zachodniopomorskie, Pomorskie, Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Wielkopolskie, Lubuskie and Podkarpackie

Trophy:
Quality of trophies from bulls in Poland varies, depending on the hunting region.
Average weight of trophies bagged on the territory of Poland varies between 4 and 6 kg. Such bulls are encountered in western and northern parts of Poland. Stronger bulls with 7-8 kg trophies are encountered on better hunting grounds of north-eastern Poland in the Mazury region and in south-eastern Poland, in Bieszczady mountains. Medal trophies over 9 kg heavy are rare, but occur every year on the best of hunting grounds.

Best dates:
Deer bulls are hunted in Poland from August 21st till the end of February. However, the best and most beautiful time for bull hunting is undoubtedly the rutting season, which normally falls on the second half of September. Hunting at that time provides hunters with incredible emotions, as it is possible to come very near to a roaring bull.

Hunting method:
Hunting in the rutting season is based mainly on spotting places where bulls are roaring, and coming up to them at a distance allowing for an accurate shot. Usual time of day for hunting is morning after sunrise and evening until sunset. However, the favourite time for the bulls is a chilly morning, which makes them much more active. When Deer are rutting, hunters can sometimes witness a very emotional scene - a fight between two competing bulls. It happens that a hunter, enchanted with the scene, forgets to shoot. In the rutting season, the skill of luring Deer by imitating the sound of a roaring bull becomes priceless. A bull, hearing sounds of another one, approaches to chase away the “competitor” from his territory. It is an extremely successful hunting method, however a very difficult one, and requiring a lot of experience.
