Hunting in Poland
Roe buck hunting

ROE DEER (Capreolus capreolus) is the most popular and most often observed game on Poland’s hunting grounds. In Poland, Roe lives generally all over the country’s territory, though it is represented by largest numbers in its western part.

Trophy:
The quality of trophies from Roebucks in Poland varies, depending on the hunting region. However, it can be assumed that an average Roebuck in Poland reaches the trophy weight of between 200 and 300 gr. Trophies of that size can be spotted in most regions of Poland, especially in western and northern parts. In central and south-eastern parts of the country, one can come upon bucks exceeding the country's average, i.e. with trophy weight of 250-350 gr. Best hunting grounds can boast medal trophies every year, often exceeding 400 gr. The record trophy was bagged in 2003 in Lubelskie Region and exceeded a hardly imaginable limit of 800 gr.

Best dates:
Roebucks are hunted in Poland from May 11th until September 30th. However, there are two times of the year when hunting results are best:
1.      At the beginning of the Roebuck hunting season, that is in the second half of May, when bucks go out on fresh green grass to graze. At that time the grass is low, which makes Roes very well visible.
2.      In the mating season, normally taking place at the end of July and at the beginning of August. At that time bucks fight and compete against one another, going out into open spaces and becoming more visible. Hunting at this time is incredibly exciting.

Hunting method:
The usual time of day for hunting Roebucks is in the morning after sunrise and in the evening until sunset. The best time of day for hunting the buck is a warm, sunny beginning of a day. After a cool night, Roe wake up and bask in the sun in open spaces. Depending on terrain, several hunting methods are possible: driving around, stalking on foot or ambush. Driving around means spotting Roebucks from a car, driving around different areas of a hunting district. It is the most effective method, because it enables the hunter to watch many bucks within a short time. However, it requires from the hunter determination in shooting and good reflex, because there is relatively little time for the decision and the shot. The ambush method is based on waiting for game in hiding, in one place. The place can be a look-out - a box put up in a high place and covered, or a hideout on the ground, in trees or bushes. During such hunting we cannot see as many bucks as while driving around, but we have a lot of time for observation and picking the most interesting trophy. Still, while driving around or hunting from ambush, it very often happens that game is too far for a successful shot. In this case, we need to stalk the bucks on foot. Stalking is one of the most difficult hunting methods and requires much feeling and hunting sense, because Roebucks are very cautious and sensitive to every movement and sound. In the Roe mating season, luring is used as a supplementary hunting method. That is based on imitating the sounds of the Roe cow or the young of the Roe.
